A BLACK PERSON WAS INTERVIEWED on TV and the interviewer asked, "Do you respect donald trump?" She responded,"As a Black person, if you treat president trump the way Whites treated President Obama, you are no better than them." I could not respond to her in person but this is my response to her "don't do as they do" answer.
Your response was not well-intended. In my opinion, it was uninformed, misinformed and a downright miscarriage of comparisons. President Obama was disrespected by White American Racists, a White Racist Congress, and now a White Racist president based solely on the color of his skin, which is how The White American Institution of Racism works. Many in White America had no clue who President Obama was because they could not get beyond the color of his skin. And please, no references to Dr. King's quote about judging persons based on the content of their character, as opposed to the color of their skin. White America does not believe that. They only use that quote of the many by Dr. King, because it is convenient to hide behind. I treat donald trump the way I would treat your average garden variety racist. He is no different. He has soiled and desecrated and denigrated and dishonored the position of President which he now holds. He is a racist and a sexist and a misogynist and a xenophobe and a liar. I do not respect racists and sexists and misogynists and xenophobes and liars. He was all of those things ---and then some---during his campaign, which was prima facie evidence of who and what he would be as president. He has done nothing since his election to dispel his arrogantly disrespectful manner, except to show varying degrees of criminality. Correspondingly, I do not respect donald trump. He does not deserve respect, especially as the president of the United States. The Struggle Continues!
