THAT DAY, 4 YEARS AGO, when I got a call late Friday night asking if I could meet Senator Cory Booker at the Ax Handle Saturday mural. I could not say yes fast enough.
I called Rudy (Dr. Rudy Jamison) and Chris (Dr. Chris Janson) and we met the Senator the next morning. Even though I had something else planned that Saturday morning, it was delayed. Favor Ain't Fair! Senator Booker said he was told when visiting Jacksonville, he had to see the Ax Handle Saturday mural and get the Real Story about the Jacksonville Youth Council NAACP 1960 sit-in demonstrations and Ax Handle Saturday. He got it. He did not just go through the motions. He did not just put in an appearance. He listened and asked questions, lots of questions, and he got lots of answers; and he stayed a while. He told us that he would spread the word about this chapter in Jacksonville's Civil Rights History when he got back to Washington, DC. He did! A Great Day. Unless WE Tell It...
